TRAINING DESCRIPTIONS
The Indiana Trafficking Victims Assistance Program (ITVAP) recognizes that survivor-led efforts are paramount in a survivor-centered, trauma-informed, culturally comprehensive approach to addressing human trafficking. The trainings below have been created in consultation with subject matter experts and advocates. They are free of charge and continuing education credits are offered for some trainings.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS & EDUCATION
HT 101: Human Trafficking in Indiana: Identification, Recognition and Reporting
(For businesses and general community audiences)
Defining human trafficking, recognizing the different forms of trafficking and exploitation, understanding the scope in Indiana, identifying your role in anti-trafficking efforts. (1 hour)

HT 102: Human Trafficking of Indiana Youth: Identification and Collaborative Support of Victims and Survivors
(For youth workers and service providers)
Understanding human trafficking in Indiana and the scope of the issue among youth; recognizing risk factors that lead to heightened vulnerability and red flags that may indicate a trafficking situation; understanding reasons victims don’t self-identify or reach out for help; identifying trafficked youth and reporting tips; connecting survivors with resources and services. (2 hours)
HT 201: Human Trafficking of Indiana Youth: Serving and Empowering Victims and Survivors
(For service providers)
Understanding human trafficking and its components through the use of case studies, identifying risk factors and red flags, explaining the impacts of trafficking. Participants will learn to identify techniques for identification of trafficked victims by building trust and support, and discuss how to build program capacity to respond through community partnerships. (2-3 hours)
HT 301: Treatment of Trafficked Persons for Clinicians
(for clinical providers)
Assisting clinical providers in understanding the special considerations related to working with individuals with complex trauma, specifically related to human trafficking. This training provides an opportunity for clinicians to utilize their current skills in unique ways and highlights the importance of therapeutic concepts in trauma-focused, human trafficking work. Also discussed are tools and additional trainings and techniques that may be helpful in working with this population. (2-3 hours)
SPECIALIZED TRAINING RELATED TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Cultural Comprehension & the LGBTQ+ Community: Identifying Needs and Addressing Challenges in Service Provision (Part 1)
(For general community members)
This training session is designed to help build understanding and develop cultural comprehension as it relates to the LGBTQIA+ community. Youth who identify as LGBTQI+ are more likely to be marginalized and at risk for homelessness, running away, and becoming victims of violence and exploitation. This workshop will present a culturally comprehensive approach to understanding the needs of this youth subpopulation and strategies for creating positive relationships and environments that allow them to thrive. (2 hours)

Trafficking in the LGBTQ+ Community (Part 2)
(For youth workers and service providers)
This training session is designed to help build understanding of the intersection of human trafficking and the LGBTQIA+ community. Youth who identify as LGBTQI+ are more likely to be marginalized and at risk for homelessness, running away, and becoming victims of violence and exploitation. This training will address those vulnerabilities to help service providers understand the need for culturally comprehensive strategies for creating positive relationships and environments that allow LGBTQIA+ youth to thrive.

Trauma Informed Care: A Survivor Centered Approach to Working with Human Trafficking
(For youth workers and service providers)
This training focuses on the lasting impact of trauma on individuals involved with human trafficking. It uses concepts from Trauma Informed Care, Survivor Centered work, Adverse Childhood Experiences and other techniques to help attendees understand how complex trauma impacts behavior, physical development, mental health and personal interactions. It provides practical techniques that anyone working directly with an individual with complex trauma can use to develop positive relationships and assist with addressing the needs of this population. (2 hours)
Vulnerable Populations: Intersection of Human Trafficking and Substance Use
(For rehabilitation/recovery support service providers, law enforcement, court officials, healthcare/treatment providers)
The main objective for this training is to highlight the intersection of human trafficking and substance use disorder. This training will demonstrate the increased vulnerability of victims of human trafficking with substance use disorder and discuss the opioid epidemic and its impact on human trafficking. Industries in substance use treatment that are vulnerable for recruitment for human trafficking and how long-term recovery process for clients of human trafficking may parallel with substance use disorder will also be explored. (2 hours)
Human Trafficking in the Digital Age: The Rise of Sexual Exploitation on the Internet
(For youth workers and general community audiences)
Exploitation and human trafficking have been depicted in film and tv for over a decade. While the representation has brought awareness to the issue, the portrayal is often littered with misinformation and false narratives. This training will highlight how these human trafficking myths have impacted news headlines, organizations, and even the social media applications youth are using. Participants will learn how this misinformation has made space for the rise of deceitful enticement and sexual exploitation online. (1.5 hours)

The following trainings are provided by ITVAP staff with specialized training and certification. The content was created outside the agency, but ITVAP appreciates the opportunity to collaborate with individuals and organizations in the community to be able to provide these trainings.
“What Would I Do?” Youth Curriculum
(For youth in grades 7-12)
“What Would I Do?” is human trafficking prevention curriculum designed to foster critical thinking about healthy relationships, develop a proactive response to harmful cultural messages, and identify action steps for responding to unsafe situations. Age-specific modules have been created with relevant, real life scenarios that encourage student engagement. The curriculum is provided by trained facilitators and aligns with many Indiana Academic Standards. (2 hours- can be divided into 2 days)

HT Law Enforcement
Interdiction for the Protection of Children (IPC)
(For law enforcement)
Designed by the Texas Department of Patrol to provide the knowledge base, tools, and resources available for an officer to identify individuals who pose a high risk to children and to assess the situation of a child who may be missing, in danger, trafficked, exploited, or at risk and what lawful immediate actions to take to protect the child. (4 hour condensed version or 16-hour full version)

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
(For youth workers and general population)
Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood. ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance misuse in adulthood. ACEs can also negatively impact education and job opportunities. However, ACEs can be prevented. This training discusses the impact of ACEs on development and how we, as a collective society, can work to decrease ACEs and their impact on future generations. (1-2 hours)
